What's New
Mid Island Communities Discussion Forum Communiqué
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 1, 2010
Mid Island Communities, & You!
CEDAR – A new community forum has begun, MIX, open to one and all with an interest in the mid Vancouver Island region.
"A simple goal directs the discussion," according to Laurie Gourlay, the moderator of the Mid Island Exchange, "to encourage comments and suggestions by which healthy communities might grow and prosper in the mid island region."
Hosted by a local non-profit society, MISSI, the discussion forum is extending an invitation to the public, organizations and associations, service clubs and neighbourhood groups, "to join in and offer your thoughts on the mid island region and it's communities."
"It's unique," says Gourlay, "the on-line forum gives you a chance to talk with others about your community, or theirs, from the comfort of your own home. At the same time, by letting each other know about the events and special places we have here in the mid island region, MIX encourages us to get up and get out - to enjoy what we have and where we live."
MIX expects to learn from its participants as well, offering an online home where people can talk about their experience, explore ideas, and think out loud about what makes communities tick. "We hope the conversation will lend itself to personal opinion, as well as draw upon VI's rich historical, cultural and natural heritage," says Gourlay. "We'd like to see MIX help to highlight the mid island's economic assets and opportunities, and in the process strengthen our local communities."
"We're also expecting to hear from neighbourhoood groups, as well as those attending meetings in the mid island," Gourlay acknowledges. "We'd like to know more about the issues, the interests and debates that have caught the attention of folk in our towns and villages, along the coast, in the rural countryside, and across the region.
Being new though this Community forum doesn't know just what to expect, or how many folk may join up. But the discussion list is hopeful it will be seen as a new way for 'mid-islanders' to keep in touch, and to exchange thoughts and ideas on things that matter to their communities.
"Essentially we'll be asking ourselves what we might do together, and on our own, to make mid Vancouver Island 'the best place on earth'," says Gourlay, "We want to know what's in the mix, so to speak, what makes our V.I. communities special!? "
The Mid Island Exchange is inviting those who have questions, or may wish to subscribe to this free and open community forum, to send an email to: "midislandcommunities@shaw.ca".

MISSI Board, Members & Friends,
We have been honoured in the BC Legislative Assembly today, with a statement by the MLA for Nanaimo - North Cowichan, Doug Routley. (Hansard Blues attached)
And very nice it is to have this recognition mid-way between Earth Day in April, and Canadian Environment Week in June!
I'm thinking that perhaps it calls for us all to consider new mid-year, mid-island resolutions - to do more for community sustainability and global stewardship as the second decade of this new millennium gets underway!?! And my hope is that you all agree and that you too will take on initiatives throughout 2010, in your home and neighbourhoods, with the world and the mid-island in mind!!
cheers,
Laurie Gourlay Mid Island Sustainability & Stewardship Initiative P.O. Box 333, Cedar, B.C., V9X 1W1
